My shares and probably those of a million others were recently stepping on stable ground until a pathetic example of modern politics decided to start blabbing his mouth to all and sundry about recession and the enormous hurdles that the British Public will have to navigate around, through and over during the next few years!

I speak about none other than Alistair Darling, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer and here is what the Guardian got from him:

"In the government's gravest assessment of the economy, which follows a warning from a Bank of England policymaker that 2 million people could be out of work by Christmas, Darling admits he had no idea how serious the credit crunch would become. Britain is facing "arguably the worst" economic downturn in 60 years which will be "more profound and long-lasting" than people had expected, Alistair Darling, the chancellor, tells the Guardian today".

Strangely, along came his boss (Mr Gordon Brown himself) a few days later to give an upbeat speach to the Scottish CBI in Glasgow!

"While never complacent about our economic prospects, I am also cautiously optimistic about the long-term resilience and underlying strengths of the British economy".

".......We will act responsibly to prepare people for the inescapable challenges ahead - in the short, medium and long term.

That is why we introduced the housing measures this week - and why we are currently working up proposals with the utility companies to address the problems caused by the impact of world oil prices on gas and electricity bills.

Not short-term gimmicks or giveaways - but firm steps towards making every home in Britain more energy efficient, thus reducing bills not just temporarily, but permanently.

Two peas from a very rotten pod?

Britain and the world are undoubtedly experiencing unsure times! We are entering what history may one day know all about but just yet we know nothing of!

What the British Public have today is a Chancellor who breeds ill, who tells us that the days will get shorter, that the sky will fall on many heads and that we might as well start digging our graves now. And his supposed buddy then enters the fray by telling us that we really have not much to worry about and that by-the-way those suffering from high fuel bills are not going to get much more than a free light bulb!

Tis time for a new Prime Minister! It is time for a bit of reality, uniformity and sense to be issued out! Britain desperately needs a leader with steel purpose, a hero to dish out hope in liberal portions and to back this up with aggressive action and result.

I say this because recently I heard someone muttering that maybe the country and the Labour Party made a mistake in dumping Tony Blair - they went on to say that the countries only hope was to bring him back again!

God help us all and in particular my shares which are currently floating at sewer level without much prospect of resurrection!
