Tis nearly the end of the Sales people! Time to go out and get those last minute bargains, the duvet that was previously so overpriced as to cause wallets to run away from home but is now so cheap at double the price! 70% off here, a give-away there yet there is no such thing as a 'happy shopper'. Not from where I'm standing anyway! It is fully understood that generally the British are a miserable bunch of people and none more so than in Edinburgh but the Winter Sales takes the national grumpiness levels to new extremes! Dour, now that's a good word!
Saturday and Sunday in Princes street is excellent to watch, terrible to be part of! Outside Next a group of extremely 'dour' men stood. Obviously their miserable wives were inside tearing clothes in half in there desperation to grab a bargain and the husbands, true-to-form, never gained the courage to tell the wife that they actually hate shopping! Inside Gap more clothes were on the floor than on the racks as desperate hunters could not find the time to replace unwanted items, Debenhams notably left customers itching and swearing as the lift took too long to arrive and the Coffee shops were empty - no time for that people!
Throughout this desperation to have the best bargain nobody smiles! Sales assistants come to work prepared with expressionless masks attached, their faces stitched into non-emotional stances (retreat is our policy) - the customers maniacal and deadly in their approach. Nobody smiles, politeness is a lost emotion and anger bubbles easily at the surface to overflow should a bargain be missed or a foot steps wrong!
Hey folks, there will be other sales, the bargains are not that great and the potential for a great day out is being missed! Relax and smile - or better not, that might cause faces to crack!
But regardless of the dour society we live in - please just shop at Debenhams only, I have allot of shares invested there!
